For many people Mothering Sunday is full of warmth and love, but for some it is a challenging and painful day.
\nIn acknowledgement of this, two of the members of Lancaster Priory, Louise Ann Wilson and Rachel-Ann
\nPowers, used their professional skills and expertise to put together an installation in which the absences,
\nlosses, longings and hurts experienced around Mothering Sunday can be acknowledged and held.<\/p>\n
The installation was inspired by a monument in the St Nicholas Chapel dedicated by her \u2018disconsolate\u2019 parents
\nto the memory of their small daughter. Central to the space was a carved wooden chest into which had been
\nplaced a semi-opaque print of words unpacking the word \u2018disconsolate\u2019 revealing the deep levels of meaning
\nand feeling held within it.<\/p>\n
There were also cards printed with a rubbing from the chest, overlaid with words exploring the meaning of
\nthe word \u2018disconsolate\u2019 among them disheartened\u2026dejected\u2026downcast\u2026disappointed\u2026crushed\u2026broken
\nhearted\u2026inconsolable\u2026unable to be comforted.<\/p>\n
On the reverse of the card were verses extracted from Psalms 22-23 that move us between despair and hope,
\noffering comfort to those who are \u2018unable to be comforted.\u2019<\/p>\n
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me
\nWhy are you so far from helping me,
\nfrom the words of my groaning?
\nO my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer
\nAnd by night, but find no rest.<\/p>\n
Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.
\nIn you our ancestors trusted.<\/p>\n
I am poured out like water
\nAnd all my bones are out of joint.
\nMy heart has turned to wax. It has melted away within me.<\/p>\n
But you, O Lord, be not far off.
\nO my strength, come quickly to help me.
\nDeliver my soul from the sword.

\nThe Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want.
\nHe makes me lie down in green pastures.
\nHe leads me beside quiet waters.<\/p>\n
